The following guidance should help you avoid many of the common problems that passengers have with carry-on or checked luggage.

o Take a trip with Only Carry-on luggage: It reduces risk to checked luggage lost or stolen.

o Do not place Heavy object in the Overhead Storage Bins: Although, the weight limit for carry-on items is generally about 40 pounds (18.2 kilos), even a much lighter bag may cause severe injury if it falls out of the bin.

o Place a Contact list inside and outside of Every Bag: Put your name and contact address & phone no. on the outside of every bag. Also, put the same information & a copy of your itinerary inside every bag. This will make it easier for the airline to recognize you, if you loose your luggage

o Customize the Look of Your carrier to Make: It Easy to recognize because there may be many bags with a similar design on a flight; customize the bag to make it simple to spot on a baggage carousel. This will also help to prevent from another passenger to taking your bag by mistake.

o Keep Important Documents with You: Do not back valuable items in checked luggage. Money, laptop computers, electronic files, and other items of high importance, should be place in a carry-on bag, preferably one that is small enough to stow under a seat. The airline might persist on checking larger carry-on bags if the storage bin become filled.

o Make sure that the Airline label on Your Checked suitcases is for the right Destination: Each of your checked luggages must have a three-letter airport identifier that should match your destination airport. If you are unsure about three-letter code, ask the ticket representative or skycap.

o Be sure that a Stub place on your Checked Luggage: This stub is critical documents that will be required if your things are lost by the airline or if you are trying to bear out that, you own a piece of luggage.

o If your checked belonging does not reach your destination, immediately report this problem to the consultant person on duty or to any other available agent.

o Get ready to Deal with lost bags: Pack according to usage so that you continue your trip with the loss on one of your luggage. Distribute key objects like business suits or underwear so that you can carry on with your business until you either get the bag back or replace the lost object. If you are carrying essential items or information for a business meeting, either carry a backup set of information or have that backup information sent ahead of time.

o Don’t Pack Hazardous Goods: There are quite a number of items or equipment, some of them not so obvious, which may cause a risk if taken on an aircraft.

There are very few people who go on holiday these days who decide to leave home without any kind of holiday insurance policy in place. It would be foolish today, indeed, to attempt to do such a thing. Holiday insurance is often included automatically as part of the package price if booking the holiday through an agent. If doing it yourself then it is certainly worth including since the price of such insurance is usually only a very small fraction of the overall price of the holiday.

One of the things to bear in mind as far as a holiday insurance policy is concerned is how it relates to your luggage, if indeed it relates to your luggage at all. There are a few things worth considering. Obviously if you are handing over your luggage to an airline it is possible that the airline will cover you for any loss or damage that can be proven to be their responsibility. Although it is easy to assume that this is a common situation, in truth there is a significant amount of small print hidden in the policy documents provided by the airline to waive their responsibility for your luggage.

This might seem unfair, but when you think about it, it would be quite impossible for the airline to ascertain the condition of the case or bag, the state in which it has been packed and the method used to seal it. Whilst some cases will be of good quality, packed soundly and sealed effectively, there will of course be many others which are tired, old and past their best, bursting full of heavy and ill-packed items, and zipped up to within a fraction of its life. It would be unfair for the airline to take equal responsibility for these bags, or indeed to spend the time it would take to assess the survival rate of each bag that it is responsible for transporting.

But at the same time, your own holiday insurance policy will face similar restrictions, and may also prove worthless in certain cases of damage or loss, either of items within the luggage or the luggage itself. It is certainly possible to obtain policies that do cover you fully for your luggage and their contents. This will increase the cost of the policy itself, but can help to provide peace of mind, especially if you are travelling with items that are necessary but expensive, such as for example, photographic equipment.

Having said that, if you are taking items of value on holiday, such as video or camera equipment, it may well be that your home insurance policy will cover you for any loss or damage to these items whilst on holiday. This is not usually the case by default, but nearly always an option on standard home insurance policies, and is well worth considering as it may well be worth insuring your items this way as it may be cheaper than it would be on a holiday insurance policy. Whichever way you do insure your items, always make sure, of course, that you take care to read the small print.

I need to rent a car for a company function. We will be driving a little over an hour to our destination. There will be 6-7 people. I was wondering if a Suburban will accommodate all of us with our luggage or do I need to rent a 12 passenger van. I really don’t want to drive the big van around but will if I have to.

You might recall the old Ford advertisement back in the days when he was starting out. He said to customers, allegedly, that they could have their car produced in any colour they liked, as long as it was black. For many years, it seemed that suitcases were much the same. This has changed dramatically these days, although you still see a majority of bags and cases trundling their way along the carousel at the baggage area of an airport are either black or navy blue. Quite why this is the case, I can’t be sure, but today there is much scope for variation.

Indeed, many suitcases today are available in a wide variety of colours and patterns, from those that look like denim to non pink, or even a glorious technicolour flower design. The individuality of a case achieves a few things. It can be fun, it also allows the manufacturer to charge more for the case than a plain one usually, and of course, most importantly, it makes it much easier to recognise when reclaiming your luggage at the end of a long trip.

Obtaining your luggage from a retailer that is less well known can mean that you have access to luggage styles which are not common at all. High street supermarkets that so often now sell anything from cars to cans and from microwavable meals to microwaves themselves are now selling cheap luggage. The problem with this is that, whilst initially the luggage may seem quite different and easily recognised, with so many stores across the country selling the exact same styles this season, you’ll find yourself just one of many disappointed customers still hunting for their bag.

Rather than spending a fortune on finding a unique luggage kit, try doing a few simple things which will help to personalise your luggage and make it far more easily recognized by you when watching the carousel rotate round for the hundred and fourteenth time. Years ago, a popular thing to do was to attach travel stickers to cases. This was mainly to record the places it had been to as a kind of public souvenir, but it also did help to personalise the case much more. Attaching stickers is one way of achieving this individuality, but why not have a bit more fun? In most DIY stores you can now pick up vinyl covering which can be used for kitchen surfaces and tables. It is hard wearing, easy to affix, and not too expensive. Covering a hard case with this is fairly easy to achieve - and you know your case it almost certainly going to be unmistakeable.

You could also try using the flat, bungee style cords which can fix right round the case and help keep it closed. They serve a practical purpose, but also help again to make your case easier to spot. A number of different styles are available, many for children too.

I have even seen some people’s cases daubed with paint. It’s cheap, and not particularly attractive, but again, it makes it easy to spot. None of these methods take a great deal of time to achieve, but you’ll thank yourself next time you’re waiting at the airport and can smugly launch yourself off to the taxi rank with your case, leaving everyone else prodding and poking through the luggage labels.

When purchasing new lightweight luggage, you have to consider the luggage warranty. They are easy to understand once you know how to interpret them. On many brands of discount luggage, the warranty states that the product warranty is in place for a period of a certain amount of years from date of purchase. This is to assist the original purchaser in the unlikely event that a defect should arise. If a defect should become apparent during the warranty period, the manufacturer will repair it at their expense. Warranties do not cover damages from common carriers. They do not cover abuse, misuse, neglect, unauthorized repair and damage while the product is in the care or custody of a third party such as an airline carrier. Prolite Luggage has this type of warranty for a period of 15 years.

Check with the place of purchase before you buy the product. Will they do the luggage warranty repairs? Will you need to send the luggage back to the manufacturer or to another facility for the repair. Generally, you will need to hang on to the warranty card and to your sales receipt. It’s also a good idea to save the carton that your lightweight luggage was packed in. If you need to send it away, you’ll be charged extra for a carton when shipping.

Some of the premium brands of luggage have a very generous warranty. Mosaic Travelgear has a peace of mind warranty. Should any damage occur to the Mosaic luggage within the first three years of purchase, the case will be repaired to the customer’s satisfaction. There’s also a limited lifetime warranty that will cover any and all manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product. They also offer loaner pieces of luggage while your piece may be out for repair. Because of the generous warranty, Mosaic is popular for corporate gifts. Cases can be monogrammed with a company name or logo. Briggs and Riley have a lifetime performance guarantee. If the Briggs & Riley case is every broken or damaged, even if the damage was caused by an airline, it will be repaired free of charge. Tumi luggage has introduced one year of completely worry-free ownership and five years of total warranty coverage. This would include wear and tear for normal use.

Common carriers such as airlines and cruise lines have insurance and they will cover some damage if they have caused it. Always look over your bags before leaving the terminal. In most cases, you will need to make the claim within 24 hours. It is usually best to make a claim right at that terminal when you’ve detected the damage. Also be sure to get a written receipt, and a phone number to call so you can follow up. The luggage warranty stands out as one of your most important travel accessories.

If your luggage is lost, find an airline representative and report the problem.

You will be given a form to complete. DO THIS IMMEDIATELY, BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE AIRPORT. This form will describe the luggage and its contents.

Obtain a copy of the form before giving it to airline representative.

If you are asked to surrender your claim checks, make sure you note this on the form.

98% of lost luggage is found within several hours, and will be put on the next flight to your If you cannot wait, make sure the airline has your address to forward your luggage.

If you need to buy or rent replacement items, most carriers will front you some cash. Receipts will be required if replacement items are worth $50 or more.

If luggage is never found, you will be asked to estimate the value (depreciated) of its contents. If you claim anything new or costly (i.e. camera), you may be asked to provide receipts and other documentation.

When shopping for luggage, you need to look not only at the price, but at the quality and features of the luggage. Here are some things to consider when buying luggage.

1. Weight: Fiberglass inner frames ensure both strength and light weight. Inner structures may also be made of aluminum, wood, durable molded plastic compounds, or any combination of the above. A weighty frame will make a case heavy even before it’s packed. Frame materials are often listed on the luggage tag.

2. Durable construction: Look for taped seams on the zippers (cloth strip) which prevents fraying. On the outside of the bag, joints should be covered with leather, nylon piping, welts to reinforce the seams and absorb wear and tear. Also, seams should be lockstitched — a method in which each stitch is reinforced, or locked, to stay in place and stand alone. This prevents unraveling.

3. Leather: Leather luggage can be very durable and looks marvelous, but it is often too heavy to be carried even when it’s empty. Top-grain or full-grain leather, the outermost layer of the hide, is stronger and more durable than leather made from splits, the layers of hide that are split off from underneath the top grain. Luggage made from splits costs less but is more likely to show wear.

4. Fabric bags: Ballistic nylon is a bit more expensive but worth it. The same bag made of Cordura or Cordura Plus costs less and is still pretty sturdy. Although tweed and brocade bags may appear sturdier than nylon ones, they are slashable and the thicker fabric adds weight.

5. Hard cases: For sheer toughness, the traditional hard cases do best although they will be heavier than the most popular style currently which is a soft-sidded case built on a sturdy frame.

While a hard-sidded shell has the advantage of being resistant to stains and can — if well packed — protect fragile items the corners can crack or dent when they receive severe blows.

6. Vinyl: Vinyl–Vinyl, a moderately priced plastic material, is used for both coverings and trims. Available in a wide range of colors, the material has strong stain-resistance, and can be wiped clean. Vinyl is sometimes treated to resemble leather–check the labeling on the product.

7. Waterproofing: The best all-around fabric is a Cordura or ballistic nylon with a waterproof seal — most bags are not waterproofed on the outside, but treated on the inside with a moisture-resisting sealant. If you are going camping, rafting, etc., you should look at outdoor supply stores that carry more rugged bags.

8. Zippers: it should be tough and run smoothly. Zippers should also be double-stitched (stitched on both sides of the zipper) and self-repairing or large, very sturdy, and smooth-running. Zippers made of polyester coils that have been woven or sewn to tapes can take a lot of pressure and can be fixed if they pop open. Large zipper pulls are always easier to work with.

9. Handles: Handle construction is crucial — whatever the style of luggage. Handles that are attached with screws are easier to replace than handles attached with rivets. Handle systems that are inside the bag take less abuse by baggage handlers. However, it does reduce your packing space.

10. Straps: Shoulder straps for duffels and garment bags should be made of wide webbing, and ideally they should be padded where they rest on your shoulders. It should be reinforced with box and cross stitching where it attaches to the bag. Choose a duffel with a shoulder strap in addition to two center handles — this increases your carrying options for times when you’ll need your hands free.

On pullmans, notice where the handles are placed. It is helpful to have both side and top handles, for easier portability. It’s equally important for the straps of travel packs to be padded, because they will be resting on your shoulders for long periods of time. Look for a padded waist or hip strap as well, to steady and center the bag on your body. All straps should be adjustable for height and weight.

11. Wheels: The wheels should be spaced as wide apart as possible and they should be recessed into the bag’s frame so that it provides some protection for them — an exposed wheel can be neatly severed from your bag by a pothole, an uneven cobblestone, or a seemingly innocuous curb. Large, sturdy in-line-skate wheels provide the ultimate in rollability and performance. Insist on smooth-rolling wheels that are firmly bolted in place.
