If you are in the market for new luggage, other than choosing the luggage type you will have to consider the size, its features and any extras as well as accessories. You should find a travel bag or luggage that is large enough to accommodate all of your gear but small enough for you to carry comfortably the entire day. Now that is tough to find as many people have the tendency to fill whatever luggage they are taking along with them even if it is that big.

While you are worried about not leaving enough space for the souvenirs that you will be taking home with you, you always have the option of being able to mail your souvenirs home should the luggage you have brought not have ample space to accommodate them.

For a mere weekend trip, a travel backpack, a carry-on duffel or a small wheeled luggage will do. For a trip that can last anywhere from a week to two weeks, a carry-on bag will do if you can pack light. Go for a larger wheeled luggage or a larger travel backpack if you have a lot of gear to pack. Of course if the trip lasts for a month or longer, this would call for a big wheeled luggage, a rather large wheeled duffel bag or travel backpack.

When thinking about luggage size, remember that airlines allow a carry-on luggage of up to the following dimensions: height 9 inches, width 14 inches and length 22 inches. If you want, you can actually ship some of your gear ahead of time to your destination in order that you won’t be carrying it the whole time. If you plan to do some shopping, you might as well bring only a few clothes and buy the rest at your vacation destination.

After having chosen the type and the size of luggage, the luggage’s features will then depend on your personal preference and what features are important for you. Features that are worth considering are pockets, storage compartments, if it comes with a removable daypack or if it is expandable.

With careful consideration, choosing luggage appropriate for your travel needs won’t be that difficult. Don’t forget the extras and accessories that will afford easier packing and security for your belongings. Keep your toiletries in one place by placing them inside small kits or bags. Secure your belongings with a padlock or keylock.

Victor Epand asked:

Panic. That’s probably the first thought facing anyone who has had the awful experience of losing their luggage. It’s also the least effective way of solving the problem.

Unfortunately it is a statistical fact that every year thousand of bags do go missing. This can be for a wide variety of reasons. Certainly it is true that some bags seem to go missing during the baggage handling process that goes on behind the mysterious conveyer belt flaps. It is also a sad fact that some luggage is stolen, and in today’s climate of increased security, the theft of luggage poses particular risks. Clearly the loss of your case with your own identifiable documents in it is especially dangerous to both yourself and potentially a considerable number of other people.

So, what is the best solution to the problem of you finding your luggage has gone missing? This, of course, depends on the exact circumstances, but let us takes two examples.

The first is that you find yourself at the end of your holiday, waiting gloomily for your luggage to materialize on the carousel at the airport. It always seems to be the case, no matter who you are, that of all the cases that come out onto the carousel, yours will be guaranteed to be the last. It almost seems to be the case that as a practical joke, the baggage handlers throw half a dozen bags onto the belt that don’t actually belong to anyone who was on that flight, and then wait for twenty minutes before putting on the bags that do. Assuming that your bag has been lost is tempting, when in fact it has only been delayed.

Certainly, showing a little patience before rushing up to the help desk in blind panic can result in slightly reduced blood pressure all round. Of course, once the baggage has appeared, and it seems fairly likely that your luggage is not there, then it is important to go to the helpdesk for the airline that you traveled with, and report the situation to them. They will then be able to investigate whether it is still on its way, or whether perhaps it is on a separate flight. In some cases, baggage does go onto the incorrect flight, in which case it has to be rerouted and forwarded to you. Possibly, it simply didn’t fit onto the plane and has been put on to the next flight, in which case, again, it will be forwarded to you. In either case you should be compensated for the inconvenience and delay.

If it has, in fact, gone completely missing, then it is at that point that it is very important that you have retained the ticket stub for that particular piece of luggage. The fact that you were given this before the arduous journey can mean in some cases that these have gone missing, but they are critical proof of your ownership of the bag, and of the airline’s responsibility. Assuming that you can provide these, then a proper investigation can be carried out.

The other situation to consider is one where you are at the airport, and whilst you are waiting, possibly as your attention was distracted by the departure board, your bag was removed from your possession. At this point, as soon as you realize this, you must report the matter to security. If no security is obvious, then the airline helpdesk will do, but more often that not, in most airlines, the presence of security guards or even airline police will be more than obvious. Providing them with a description of the bag, and the location where it was last seen will assist them in rapidly scanning the area and using CCTV footage to identify the occasion of the theft.

As long as the theft is reported quickly, in many instances, it does prove possible to apprehend the culprit and reunite the baggage with the forlorn traveller. It is always helpful to make sure that not only is your name, location and address written on the luggage label on the outside of the bag, but as these can easily be pulled off, having duplicate information on a label inside the bag can prove a very effective means of having the bag reunited with its owner much quicker than it would be if the only way of identifying the owner of the bag is in matching their underwear.

David Gabbitas - UKIM asked:

In days of old and not so very old it was considered that if your travel luggage, on its’ own, was not as heavy as your holiday items, then you were somehow being too casual and that was not the proper to travel.

Thankfully people are much savvier now especially with the horrendous additional expense of excess baggage costs. And with some airlines charging up to £45.00 per kilo for overweight items (on certain flights) using heavy hard bodied old style travelling luggage could end up costing a fortune.

Caribee’s travel bags and travel luggage are of a lightweight, but, sturdy construction and offer oodles of options for long or short distance travelling.

The Rover Twin 80 Gear Bag has a twin layer design, for ease of packing and unpacking, lockable zip housing and an internal compression strap, to keep items secure and battened down. Can hold a massive 80 litres, but, weighs in at a, puny, 4.2 kgs. So you have plenty weight allowance left over for that extra pair of shoes, bikini or, perhaps, a holiday gift on your return flight.

The Fusion 21 wheeled trolley bag with harness can be wheeled or carried on the back like a backpack and comes with a harness designed to, more evenly, distribute weight. The internal compression system means that your clothes arrive at your destination crease free. Ladies, this means you won’t have to pack the travel iron; so perhaps, you may fit in another dress or bikini. This little gem, even, comes with its own laundry pocket and weighs only 2.5kgs empty.

The Fast Track 85 offers sturdy, lightweight, spacious, but, ultra tough travel luggage options and with an ingenious detachable day pack, ideal for side trips or as carry on luggage, this high quality travel luggage has an answer, and pocket solution, for every travelling situation.

Caribee offer a range of travel bags and travel luggage that has been designed to distribute weight over the back ,shoulders and hips for a more comfortable carrying experience or to be wheeled to check in on fast flow wheels that further help take the strain.

My 1 bag disappeared on Dec. 2nd from Cork Airport (Ireland), and at this point I’m told its most likely not going to turn up. I was wondering…what is the longest someone else has waited for their luggage once lost or if you ever received your luggage after being told the case is closed. Just curious….holding out with baited breath, as I had a family photo album inside.

Gasgano 55 asked:

I’m planning on travelling from Montréal, QC to Lake Charles,LA.

I have a Montréal - New York ticket with Air Canada and a New York - Houston flight with Continental Airlines.

Will my luggage follow between both airlines or do I have to get it back and check it in again in New York? The problem is I don’t have much time in NY and I feel checking in my luggage there would make me miss my connecting flight. I know that when you’re flying the same airline, it’s checked to your final destination.

What about for different airlines?

Phil asked:

Figures released by the Association of European Airlines (AEA) have shown that over two thousand claims for lost luggage were made during the first six months of last year alone. This was an 85% increase on the same period of time for the previous year, with the average claim being made for over £200.

Lost luggage is now top of the list for travel insurance claims with airlines losing a record amount of baggage daily. Insurance experts only expect these figures to rise, as managing director of Insureandgo, Perry Wilson warns, “We have seen an enormous rise in claims for lost luggage and can unfortunately expect more families’ holidays to be ruined by lost baggage.”

British Airways came in for particular criticism after it was announced that the airline was responsible for the loss of over one million bags last year, the second worst airline in Europe for lost belongings behind TAP Air Portugal.

AEA revealed that BA had lost 26.5 bags for every 1,000 passengers that had flown with them. This is a rise on the previous year of 23 bags for every 1000 passengers.

Ryanair, the budget airline claimed to have losses of only 0.4 bags per 1000 passengers, although many of their customers decide not to check in their bags because of the charge for each item.

Peter Sherrard, a Ryanair spokesman says their passengers should be given lower insurance premiums as a result, “For years the car insurance industry has provided discounts for lower-risk categories such as women drivers and the over-thirties. The time has come for passengers flying with airlines that deliver the best customer service to enjoy the same discounts.”

Britain’s biggest airline, BA, had admitted to having a 22,000 item backlog and that it was flying airplanes full of delayed bags across the Atlantic as well as using a convoy of vans to take luggage across Europe.

Aviation watchdogs have asked for the European Commission to introduce a league table showing the best and worst performing airline companies. It is not currently compulsory for airlines to release their annual records and this saw Virgin Atlantic and Aer Lingus failing to provide their figures for last year.

The Air Transport Users Council (AUC) has partly attributed the climb in lost luggage to the increased levels of hold luggage seen in UK airports such as Heathrow, as a result of the one-bag rule brought in to operation following the recent terror attacks.

AUC chairman Tina Tietien said, “Whatever the extenuating circumstances, when passengers hand their bag in at check-in, they should expect to see their bag at the other end.”

Despite the obvious inconvenience and stress that missing baggage can have on travellers, adequate insurance should offer a certain amount of confidence if the worst should happen. However, a survey carried out by Legal and General showed that the average value of luggage and contents for a family of four off on holiday is over £2,500, and that many home contents insurance policies should provide necessary cover for families and individuals holidaying away from home.

Head of GI products at Legal and General, Andy Dellbridge confirmed, “We automatically think of claiming under a travel policy but customers may be covered under the personal possessions section of their home insurance policy. It seems more important than ever that holidaymakers check they do have insurance cover in place.”

Judith Wesson asked:

When you are preparing to travel, you have several choices to make and one of them is what type of luggage you are going to select. For generations that choice has been leather for quite a number of reasons. To start with, leather luggage is your first choice when it comes to style and you certianly wouldn’t wear a pair of nice shoes that werent made of leather, for just the same reason.

Part of the total package if you are going to travel in style, is leather luggage and there is just no getting around that fact. While good quality leather luggage is going to cost you a bit more, it is going to last a lifetime and only gets better with age. Another reason to choose leather luggage is that it just never goes out of style, as luggage made from other materials tends to do.

Leather is durable and will protect your belongings well, so you never have to worry about your things being damaged when they are safely packed away in a nice set of leather luggage. Leather luggage also comes with all of the latest features that can be found in any top quality luggage including telescopic travel handles and multiple compartments to organize all of your travel necessities in.

Why settle for second best and buy a set of luggage that is not going to stand the test of time? If you go with leather luggage the first time around, you will never have to go back to shop for luggage ever again. There are several different types of leather to choose from when selecting leather luggage, so you may want to do some research on the subject before you make your final selection. If you want to give yourself a treat then consider gifting yourself with a nice set of leather luggage.

Exotic Traveler asked:

My experience in train travel is non-existent as I have always taken (expensive) taxis. So in trying to smarten up a bit with my travels, I decided to take the airport express train from Berlin Zoologischer Garten to Schoenefeld (SXL) for a flight to Budapest. Cost $2.40 Euros compared to $35.00 plus tip with a taxi!!! I will need to bring with me 2 carry on pieces of luggage. Is 2 pieces of carry-on luggage acceptable when traveling trains…What is the limit? Thanks everybody
