How safe is it to check a dog as luggage with an airport?

I’m looking into adopting a dog sometime next month, and would like to take it with me on a trip sometime next year. The flight will be about an hour, and I’ve heard very mixed things about how airport workers handle animals as luggage.

I’m unsure of the size of the dog, as I’ve yet to adopt, but I’ve also heard that if a dog is small enough, you can take it on the plane in a cat-size carrier.

Any knowledge on this? If there’s any chance of injury, I’ll just drive up.
